Welcome to Lumberton Township

This site offers everything you need to know about Lumberton Township, for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Lumberton was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 14, 1860, from portions of Medford Township, Southampton Township and Eastampton Township. Portions of the township were taken on March 12, 1924, to form Hainesport. The township was named for its early lumber industry, with pine trees cut down to supply wood used in Philadelphia. Lumberton is governed under the Township form of New Jersey municipal government, one of 141 of 565 municipalities statewide that use this form, the second-most commonly used form of government in the state. The Township Committee is comprised of five members, who are elected directly by the voters at-large in partisan elections to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with either one or two seats coming up for election each year as part of the November general election in a three-year cycle. At an annual reorganization meeting, the Township Committee selects one of its members to serve as Mayor and another as Deputy Mayor. As of 2024, members of the Lumberton Township Committee are Mayor Terrance Benson (term as Mayor ends 12/31/2024; term on Committee ends 12/31/2026), Deputy Mayor Kendra Hatfield (term as Deputy Mayor ends 12/31/2024, term on Committee ends 12/31/2024), Committeeman Robert Rodriguez (term ends 12/31/2024), Committeewoman Lori Faye (term ends 12/31/2025) and Committeewoman Gina LaPlaca (term ends 12/31/2026).

Our History

Lumberton or as it was once known, Lumbertown, was a pioneer settlement. Its name came from the fact that Pine trees were abundant in the vicinity and boats and rafts carried lumber and cord wood from the Rancocas Creek to Philadelphia and other places. There were two or three lumber yards and saw mills at one time. In 1683, Robert Dimsdale, an English physician, bought a tract of land from William Penn on the North side of the Rancocas Creek.

PRESS RELEASE – SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER

LUMBERTON TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE STATEMENT ON APPOINTMENT OF SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER TO LUMBERTON TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR

LUMBERTON, NJ – Lumberton Township remains dedicated to working with the School District to ensure that the services of a School Resource Officer continue to be provided to the School District for the 2024-2025 school year.  In light of the continued steep decline in State aid to Lumberton schools, and the resulting severe cuts anticipated in the district’s budget, the Township Committee is pleased to announce that we are working to finalize an agreement with the district that will enable the Township to fund the salary of the current School Resource Officer through the next school year, with the expectation that this agreement will be approved at the next Township Committee meeting on June 6th.

Lumberton Township Committee shares the sentiments of Lumberton Police Chief Anthony D. Nippins, who issued the following comment:

“Our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students and District staff remains unwavering. While we understand the financial constraints faced by the school, ensuring the presence of a school resource officer is paramount, the Lumberton Township Police Department and Lumberton Township Committee are actively exploring alternative funding sources to support this crucial partnership in maintaining a secure learning environment for our community.”

 Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

(Lumberton Township/Burlington County, NJ).  A team of assessors from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) on Friday May 17, 2024 will examine all aspects of the Lumberton Township Police Department policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services Chief Anthony Nippins announced today.

            “Verification by the team that the Lumberton Township Police Department meets the Commission’s “best practice” standards is part of a voluntary process to achieve accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence”, Chief Anthony Nippins said.

As part of this final on-site assessment, employees and members of the general public are invited to provide comments to the assessment team. They may do so by telephone or email.  The public may call 609-267-1111 Ext. 145 on Friday May 17, 2024, between the hours of 10AM-11AM.  Email comments can be sent to ccheesman@lumbertontwp.com.

Telephone comments are limited to 5 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the NJSACOP standards.  Please contact Lieutenant Christopher Cheesman at 609-267-1111 Ext. 221 for information about the standards.
